Quick and Simple Crafts: How to Make a Mini Fruit Piñata Garland

Getting ready to decorate for an epic summer soirée or simply want to add a little colour to your home? Well, we’ve got just the thing. Nearly good enough to eat, our fun fruity piñatas are quick and easy to make with the kids over the summer holidays. Brought to you by the incredible Suzie Attaway, this eye-catching garland is one the kids will love (especially if you plan on filling the fruit up with yummy sweets). Just follow Suzie’s quick and easy instructions to get started.

You will need:

  • Fruit templates
  • Scissors
  • A thin cardboard box, flattened
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Masking tape
  • Red, yellow, green, pink, orange, black & white tissue paper
  • Glue
  • String

Step 1

Download the template, print on paper and cut out with scissors.

Step 2

Place the templates on the flattened cardboard box and draw around each shape twice. Cut out.

Step 3

Measure and cut some 2.5cm wide strips of cardboard for the sides of the piñatas.

Step 4

Take one of the fruit pieces and stick a strip of cardboard around the edge with small pieces of masking tape. Then place the matching fruit piece on top and stick in place as before. Fold the end of the strip back to create a small door and fill with confetti or small sweets.

Step 5

Repeat to make the other fruit shapes.

Step 6

Create the fringing by cutting the different colour tissue paper packs into 3cm wide strips, then make 2cm long cuts along each strip.

Step 7

Starting at the bottom, glue the fringing layer by layer to the surfaces and sides of each cardboard fruit. When completely covered, neatly trim the sides with scissors.

Step 8

Cut out paper ‘pips’ for the melon and orange piñatas, and glue in place.

Step 9

For the strawberry and pineapple piñatas, cut and glue strips of green leafy fringing and glue to the tops.

Step 10

Thread a tapestry needle with string and pierce through the top of each fruit piñata to create a garland.

And ta-da – your finished fruity piñata garland is complete!
