Ditch Red, Go Green! Your Guide to a Sustainable Christmas

We all know Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year but let’s be honest, it also comes with its fair share of challenges. Like hunting down the perfect gift for your tricky-to-buy-for friend, or the somehow haunting *ding* of the cooking timer. It can be an especially hard time if you’re trying to be more mindful of your impact on the planet. So, if you’re determined to be more eco-conscious this holiday season, read on for all our handy tips on how to have a holly, jolly and sustainable festive period.

Avoid overconsumption

Don't let those pressies go to waste!

We’ve all been there. You're sitting around the tree on Christmas morning, tearing into some festive wrapping only to uncover... yet another bath set. DUN-DUN-DUNNN. You smile and act overjoyed, not wanting to offend Great Auntie Mildred, while politely considering who to re-gift it to.

While it’s always the thought that counts, we could all do without the guilt leaving that gift to collect dust in a cupboard before it’s inevitably thrown out. According to the UK Gift Card and Voucher Association (UKGCVA), 20% of unwanted gifts are thrown out and end up in landfill, contributing to a massive waste problem.

So this year, instead of re-gifting and continuing the cycle of underwhelming pressies, why not make a difference while making sure your loved ones get something they’ll really love? If you’re someone who always ends up receiving more toiletry sets than you could ever possibly use in one lifetime, donate them to a local homeless shelter or food bank. While you may not be overjoyed at another fancy shower gel, it could make someone else’s day.

And to avoid future mis-giftings, just let your family and friends know that the greatest gift they could give you is to save their money or take you out for a festive cup of coffee or a cute cinema date instead. After all, experiences are way more your thing and it's a great excuse to spend some quality time with the ones you love. (They'll probably be relieved at not having to do that dreaded last-minute dash to Boots anyway).

Gifts they’ll actually want

Don’t let the Christmas pressure sway you into making mindless purchases. When selecting a pressie for someone special spend time really thinking about what they want or need. Are they the sentimental sort? Why not buy them a special decoration to hang on their tree and remind them of you for years to come. Do they have dreams of becoming the next Agatha Christie? Treat them to a lovely new notebook, with a few encouraging words written on the first page.

You can even use this as an excuse to bust out your glue gun and get crafting. Whether it’s making them a card or using your talents to craft a truly unique gift, they’ll love that personal touch you’ve added. Plus, this is a great way to upcycle something you already have and give it a new lease of life.

However, if crafting isn’t really your thing, don’t be afraid to ask them outright what they would like to find under the tree. While it may take the surprise out of the unwrapping, they’ll appreciate that you care enough not to leave them with loads of clutter and get something that they’ve long been lusting after.

If you’re determined to keep the mystery alive but they’re particularly hard to buy for or maybe you don’t know them that well, no worries! Gift vouchers are particularly welcomed by those with limited space at home, as well as those friends with kids. They may just need that little push to do something for themselves.

Made to last...

Tree-rific traditions

There’s nothing quite like taking down your Christmas decorations from the attic and coming across those extra-special baubles that make you smile. Does that Beans on Toast Bauble remind you of midnight feasts with your uni flatmates? Or the Aubergine Hanging Decoration have you giggling over that one inside joke (you know the one). Great decorations can last a lifetime. So, for Christmas this year why not start a new tradition and give the gift of a quirky dec?

It’s a great way to carry cherished memories and add extra-special touches to your tree. Plus, this gifting idea is also great if your friend has limited space or a hatred of clutter. Check out our range of baubles, designed to bring joy to the festive season. Find the bauble that most reminds you of them and give a gift that they’ll keep with them for years to come.

Hanging Baubles

Buy better, they deserve it!

When thinking about what to put under the tree this year remember quality over quantity always wins in the end. So, instead of selecting some plastic contraption that will break after two uses, get them something that they can take with them on all their adventures, big or small. Whether it’s a beautiful backpack that will accompany them on their next trip or a notebook with luxurious, thick ivory paper to capture all their thoughts, they’ll feel truly spoiled.

They’ll even love showing off that adorable reusable bottle you got them, or getting that extra stamp at Costa with their extra-special reusable cup. Perfect for replacing single-use plastic and becoming a gift that keeps on giving, for both recipient and the planet! So, choose giftable goodies designed to last so that they may be reused for years to come.

Sustainable Kraft Wrap

Wrap responsibly

When it comes to gifting consciously, it’s not just what’s on the inside that counts. As the number of eco-friendlier wrap options continues to grow, there are even more elegant, yet eco-conscious ways to wrap sustainably.

Discover fabric drawstring pouches that are a luxe alternative to traditional wrapping paper. Not only will you be eliminating waste, but also levelling up your gift-giving. Who wouldn’t love to receive a luxe little pouch with their pressie? It’s almost a gift in itself. Plus, all you have to do is tighten the drawstrings and go! (A treat for those who hate fiddling with tape). The lucky recipient can use the pouches to keep their most treasured baubles extra safe for next year or reuse them for another present.

However, if you know they wouldn't want to miss out on the memorable joy of ripping into your present, then you can still find sustainable paper wrap (and all the trimmings), including Paperchasers’ favourite Kraft range. This fabulously festive wrap can be recycled and has been crafted using FSC-approved sources. Decorate with recycled paper bows or reuse ribbon from other gifts you may have received.

Become a real rental claus

Did you know Christmas tree rentals are a thing? No, really! Renting is a great alternative to buying a plastic tree or worrying about dumping your old tree in the landfill come January. Businesses like The Eco Christmas Tree Company provide potted Christmas trees that you water daily during the holiday season. Then, when it’s time to take down your decorations, just wait for your tree to be collected and they’ll be taken off to be replanted so that it can re-grow and join another family’s celebrations next year.

As it’s estimated that 7 million Christmas trees end up in landfill every year, renting helps eliminate waste and ease the guilt of knowing a tree has been chopped down to accommodate your celebrations. But if you want a tree you won’t have to give back you could even choose a wooden alternative. The perfect new eco tradition for your household and with plenty of space for some colourful baubles too!
