HOW TO MAKE: PAPER FLOWER CROWN

Be the envy of your friends and turn heads with this beautiful paper flower crown, for a bespoke and uniquely you accessory. This easy to follow guide comes with free downloadable templates to create this must-have festival adornment – let’s do this…

PAPERCHASE PAPER FLOWER CROWN

We’ve teamed up with Paper flower expert Laura from Things by Laura to create an easy to make version, of her paper flower crown. Laura takes you through each step below (materials and templates at the bottom).

PAPERCHASE PAPER FLOWER CROWN DIY

For this DIY crown, I chose a combination of neon and pastel colours for that perfect summer festival feel!

1 - GATHER MATERIALS

Before you start, gather all of your materials and tools together. You will need 5 sheets of A4 paper, a printer, some craft wire, about 3m of ribbon, some coloured tape, a pin, some scissors or a craft knife and a glue gun.

Download and print the flower templates (at the bottom of this article). Each page should be printed on a different colour; I have already split up the flower components to give a nice spread across your chosen palette.

2 - CUT OUT AND SORT FLOWER COMPONENTS

Carefully cut out all of the flower parts and sort the components as shown so that you know which centres go with which petals.

3 - WRAP WIRE

Measure around your head and cut two lengths of craft wire the same length. Loosely twist them around each other and twist a loop at each end that is approximately 1cm across. Then, starting at one end, at the loop, wrap the wire in coloured tape

4 - RIBBON

Take two pieces of ribbon that are each around 1.5m long and loop through the ends of the wire and knot, as shown.

5A - LILY - ABC

Now the flower fun begins!

THE LILY:

  • Curl the edges of the petal around a round pencil to give them their form
  • With the edge of some scissors, carefully curl the star shape centres
  • Glue together in layers, as shown

5B - PEONY - ABC

THE PEONY:

  • Curl the petals in towards the centre of the flower
  • With the edge of some scissors, carefully curl the fringed paper. Then roll and glue it
  • Glue together in layers, as show.

5C - BUTTERCUP - Abc

THE BUTTERCUP:

  • The same way as you did for the peony, curl the petals in towards the centre of the flower
  • And, again, use scissors, curl the centre leaves
  • Glue in layers as shown, finishing with the tiny circle of paper – be very carful with the glue gun on this bit! PVA might be easier.

5D - FINISHED FLOWERS

The finshed flowers!

6 - PIN

Take a pin and pierce a hole through the middle of the largest of the circles you have cut out, the centre is marked on them as a guide.

7A - STEM AB

Cut a 10cm length of thin craft wire and bend it to 90 degrees at one end. Thread the bent end of the wire through the pierced hole and add a blob of glue, then stick the stem to the back of the flower, repeat until all flowers have a stem!

8B - FILLER FLOWERS AB

The finishing touches are the filler flowers. You need to sandwich a thin craft wire stem between the outside of the flower and the glue tab.

9A - FLOWER LAYOUT all

Now, lay your wire frame on a flat surface and play with the layout of your flowers. You can either make tiny bunches of flowers and tape them on in groups or you can attach each flower individually. Once you are happy with when you have placed them, tape the flowers on with the same tape that you used to cover the wire. Start at the front and work your way to the back.

Now, have a look in the mirror and see if there are any gaps and twist the filler flowers onto the frame and cover the wire stems with more tape.

ALT_BIRDSEYE

Tie a bow or a knot in the ribbon so that the wire frame fits you! You can bend the wire stems to rearrange the flowers and make sure they look their best when you have your crown on your head!

There are lots of lovely colours to choose from in the Spectrascope range… why not try a different combination of summery pastels and neon? Or something entirely different!
